It’s been three seasons now since Kris Bryant’s triumphant debut for the Chicago Cubs. After much speculation, Bryant wasted no time living up to—and exceeding—all expectations. In three campaigns, he’s already amassed a 19.7 rWAR, 94 home runs and 319 runs scored. He’s just coming into his peak years and already has a Rookie of the Year and MVP award on his mantle. The MVP came in 2016, but he didn’t take much of a step back in 2017 as he continues to grow as a player. In fact, his 2017 OPS was actually higher, though his OPS+ dropped a couple points. Regardless, he’s as sure a bet as any to produce top Dober Fantasy Points year in and year out.
2017: After an MVP 2016 campaign, his 2017 season can be viewed as a step back though he produced a higher OPS, better average and only saw a slight drop in his OPS+, which still ended at 143. By the conventional numbers, however, 2017 was a step backwards. He regressed from 39 home runs to 29 during a season in which so many hit their career high in dingers. His RBIs dropped drastically, too, from 102 to 73 despite Chicago’s offense being just as—or by some numbers, more—productive as 2016. Some of it was timing and some was luck. Despite the drop in homers and RBIs, Bryant was a reliable contributor. In a lineup as stacked as Chicago’s, the man expected to sit in the middle should have plenty of opportunities to drive in runs. The home run and RBI numbers will bounce back in 2018.
