George Springer is one of the best leadoff hitters in the game. His power is greater than most leadoff bats, and while he has speed he’s not a big stolen-base threat. Despite that, Springer boasts a high OBP to go along with his power. It’s that on-base ability that’s made him an effective hitter atop the order for the Houston Astros. He’ll be in that role again in 2018 setting the table for the likes of Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman. Springer had a breakout campaign in 2017, but he has been a consistent 125 OPS+ bat in his first four seasons, highlighting a high floor to go along with his high ceiling for Dober Fantasy Points in the coming season.
2017: After three strong seasons, Springer broke out in a big way during his 2017 campaign when he was 27 years old. The former right fielder who moved to center missed a few games, playing only 140 after a full 162-game slate in 2016, but he still managed to record career highs in home runs with 34 and RBIs with 85. With a slash line of .283/.367/.522, Springer had a career year in average, on-base and slugging. Cumulatively, the young outfielder posted an .889 OPS and 144 OPS+, making his first All-Star team, getting recognition as a Silver Slugger and even garnering a few MVP votes. In Houston’s run to a title, Springer was a huge force in the ALDS and World Series. His bat went quiet against the Yankees in the ALCS, but he broke out in a huge way against the Dodgers despite looking lost at the plate. He hit five homers in the World Series and was crowned World Series MVP.
