Playing high school football at a high level in the state of Georgia made New York Giants tight end Evan Engram an elite prospect. He drew SEC interest and ended up playing for Ole Miss where he had a standout college career on the gridiron.
Engram was able to contribute to the Ole Miss offense immediately. While Donte Moncrief and Laquon Treadwell were the star pass catchers as highly recruited receivers, Engram was still a valuable contributor. He finished the season with 21 catches for 268 yards and three touchdowns. Having Bo Wallace under center was very beneficial as the Rebels threw nearly 500 times that season.
The team did not throw as much in 2014 when Engram was a sophomore. However, he was still able to have a breakout season because Moncrief left for the NFL and Treadwell was injured. As a top target in the offense, Engram exceeded 100 receiving yards on three occasions, including his five-catch, 176-yard performance in a win over Mississippi State. He finished the year with 38 catches for 662 yards and a pair of touchdowns en route to being named to the SEC first team.
Engram’s yards per catch average decreased to 12.3 the following year. Still, he finished the season with 38 catches for 464 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Since Treadwell was healthy, he had a monstrous season for the Rebels, which cut into Engram’s targets. The tight end would not have to wait long to get his opportunity to shine, however
The Rebels lost a strong class of players headed into the 2016 season, but Engram was not one of them. The team suffered, going 5-7, but Engram remained as his team’s go-to target in a season in which he was named a First-Team All-American. Despite missing the final game and not playing in a bowl game, he finished with 65 catches for 926 yards and eight touchdowns. Over the course of the season, he had over 100 yards in four games and had at least two catches in every game in which he played.
Coming off of a monstrous senior year in which he could have exceeded 1,000 yards if he was 100 percent healthy and his team was more successful, Engram was an appealing draft prospect. The New York Giants recognized this and selected him in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He was the second tight end selected.
Expectations were certainly high for Engram in his rookie season. The New York Giants struggled mightily despite making it to the postseason just one year prior. Since Odell Beckham Jr. and a slew of other receivers were injured, Engram was able to establish himself as his team’s No. 1 target. And it appears that he could be a big part of this offense for years to come.
