With Hisashi Iwakuma (shoulder) rendered unavailable to make Saturday's start, the door is open for Gaviglio to stay in the rotation for another turn. The 27-year-old would make sense in some ways, as Saturday would allow him to start on normal rest, and his 3.43 ERA is much better than Christian Bergman's (5.44 ERA), who is the other candidate for the assignment. However, Gaviglio's 5.89 FIP suggests his success is due to plenty of luck, so the Mariners may take that into account when they ultimately make the final decision on who remains in the rotation for the time being.
